Home gym equipment essentials

Whether you are just starting your fitness journey or you are a fitness warrior, working out at home with your own equipment has some serious benefits. I have gone ahead and picked out my top 6 equipment essentials for a home gym workout. Some of them, like the jump rope and bands, are even great for workouts on the go whether you have a work trip or island getaway in the near future.

Home Gym Equipment Essentials

1. Exercise/Yoga Mat

You will want to make sure when working out from home that you create your own space. An exercise mat or yoga mat is a great way to allocate yourself at least one rectangle of workout-designated space. You can even make it a workout space in your backyard or beach! I suggest looking for a thicker mat for extra cushioning, especially if you are working out on hardwood floors or tile.

2. Resistance Bands

Resistance bands are lightweight, inexpensive, and take up little room making them an essential item in your gym bag. I always pack my set of bands for travel as they are a great way to add an extra challenge for both lower and upper body moves. Usually, band packs range from light to heavy. The tighter the band, the more challenging it will be to work with.

Try using the light bands for active stretches during your warm-up.

3. Hip/Booty Band

Looking to form the booty you have always dreamed of? Then the booty band is a must!

Bring your body weight and weight lifting to the next level with exercises like hip abductions & adductions, banded squats, inner & outer thigh contractions, banded kickbacks, walking forward/sidewards, banded leg presses and more!

4. Jump Rope

Jumping rope isn’t just for kids. A good, sturdy, weighted jump rope is great to add to your arsenal of equipment because it can provide both a great warmup and serious workout. Taking up a limited amount of space, jump rope can have many similar benefits to that of running. The constant jumping will strengthen glutes, hamstrings, and calves, helping you build a stronger run and cardiovascular system.

5. Dumbbell Weights (Medium Weight)

Dumbbells are a great way to add resistance to your workout. I suggest purchasing a medium-weight dumbbell which will vary depending on your strength. Resistance training not only tones muscles and builds strength, but it can also burn calories, increase energy levels, protect bone health, and more.

Anywhere from 8 lbs to 15 lbs would be best to start with. SELF Magazine has some great recommendations in their article “Here’s how to choose the right weights for strength training“.

6. Foam Roller

Foam rolling is a workout must! Ideal for warming up your muscles before a workout and stretching them out post-workout. Foam rollers break down muscle knows and relaxes lower back, thighs, and legs. The best way to foam roll is by rolling till you find a sore area and applying pressure on the roller for at least 30-seconds where you find the most tension.
